Workshop Residency

The Costa Azul Arts Residency is looking for adventurous artists to push boundaries and personal experiences to explore the creative process while embracing the local environment. Our visual arts non- profit organization seeks to redefine the term “residency” to include and embrace Mazatlan by stepping into and engaging a part of the city as a tourist. We hope to create a supportive environment for studio artists to work in a landscape of visual historic and/or economic significance in a way that refreshes their practice while engaging with the seasonal communities that come to enjoy the city..

AN ARTISTS WORKSPACE BY THE BEACH

Costa Azul Arts Residency provides time and space to artists as a two-week, full month or multi-month live-in residency available throughout the year. The space can be used as an art studio or writing retreat. Preference will be given to artists looking for new experiences to inform their studio work and those wanting to dive deeper into a specific area of their practice. Artists are required to host a workshop event during their residency stay.

Costa Azul Arts is a community art space set up as a private enterprise. Between the months of November and April we organize events to encourage creativity within the community.

THE Live/Work SPACES

TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

Many public transit options including the city buses, Uber, Didi and the iconic Mazatlan open air taxis called Pulmonias are readily available within steps from the apartment. There is parking for one vehicle in front of the building and additional street parking nearby. Airport Taxis are available upon arrival but we are happy to provide pick-up and drop-offs to the airport.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

We are located in the Golden Zone (Zona Dorada), expect to hear lively Banda from the beach in the afternoons, live-music in the evenings and city traffic noise depending on the time of year.

There are limited places to buy professional art supplies. It is recommended to bring what you need or adapt your working process to explore what the city has to offer.

APPLICATION and RATES

Please submit images of your work and a short proposal (500 words) on how the time and space will be used during the residency. We accept applications from diverse disciplines including visual interdisciplinary artists, musicians and writers. Preferential treatment will be given to those artists that have elements of drawing and/or walking incorporated into their practice.

To help bring art to the community, during their stay resident artists are also requested to commit to conducting a two-hour workshop or artist presentation related to their practice. This is a unique opportunity for resident artists to share their process and meet others from the community.

For the Residency there is an up-front fee of $500 USD for a two-week stay or $750 USD monthly. We are a non-profit enterprise, and fees are designed to sustain and maintain the facility. Additional guests are welcome for an additional fee of $100.00 weekly.  Applications are reviewed quarterly and artists will be contacted for an in-person (virtual) interview.

Feel free to contact us at costaazularts@gmail.com for further enquiries or to arrange a time to (virtually) tour the space.
